With over twenty-five years of diverse architecture experience, Co-founder
of Salient Associates, Charles Whelan is the principal in charge of design
and administration services. Charles earned his Bachelor of Architecture
from the University of Minnesota in 1988. He began his architectural career
by managing an overseas office in Madagascar for a US company. While there,
he executed a wide variety of projects for church-based clients and
humanitarian organizations which included schools, churches, hospital,
offices, an orphanage and a park visitor's complex. When he returned to the
United States, Charles also worked as a project architect for an award
winning firm which he managed the design and production of various
educational projects like the Hackensack Middle School addition, Bergen
County Schools Administrative offices and the Teterboro Campus of the Bergen
County Technical High School renovation and remodel. More recently, Charles
has been involved in various projects with David Barbour of David Barbour
Architects. These projects include the design and construction of large
office building with garage and the South End Redevelopment project which
involved large scale planning for various housing types for the city of
Bridgeport. Mr. Whelan has also been involved in the design build of the CT
Clinic Building at the Armed Forces General Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya as
well as the Gil Gil Jump Tower in Gil Gil, Kenya for the Army Corp of
Engineers.
In addition to architectural projects, Charles has designed and managed over
1000 telecommunication sites for top wireless providers such as T-Mobile,
Sprint/Nextel and AT&T. He has provided expert testimony and professional
advice to municipalities considering applications for construction of
wireless facilities.
Charles is also a retired US Army Corp of Engineers Major and
NCARB-certified and licensed to practice architecture in New York, New
Jersey, Delaware, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Florida
